Arosa has been for sale for a while. We carried out a brief review of her condition in January 2025 to understand the best course of action.
Hull. Was in better condition than the overall view of the boat would suggest. Apparently it had been a lot of fresh water in it for a long time. There was a damp patch of about 10 inches square amidships by the keel that I was unable to investigate but it might be diesel.
Deck. This was not good. The aft third of the aft deck was badly rotten as was the main part of the foredeck. The structure under seemed sound though.
Blister. This was sound.
Cockpit. Everything seemed sound but it was all a mess. I didn’t see any engine hatch covers.
Mast and boom. The join in the fore of the mast had failed for the lower six feet and instead of a repair there were brass straps securing the halves. An easy problem to fix as I have done it and added a cover strip bonded over the repair. Most of the standing rigging seemed to be present and correct. There were no sails. and the running rigging was strew about the place and would probably need 100% replacing.
Propulsion. The prop turned freely but the engine was seized. It was an old known make so a repair may be possible. (Yanmar?)
Rudder. Stock pintle pintls and gudeon seemed OK. I didn’t see the rudder blade but was assured there was one! Operating mechanisms in place.
Electrics and Gas. Maybe workable with some love.
Trailer. Would be good enough to get the boat 25 yards out of the shed which would put it in a fine place to cut up for scrap!
Keels There was no sign of rust weeping around the operating mechanism but an external view of the keels suggest they are well and truly corroded in place, not a difficult job.
Minor items fixture and fittings seemed to be there somewhere but all needing refurbishment. !
Overall assessment. A104 is in a condition that someone with time and experience could renovate/restore. The deck in particular would require some knowledge of laminating work. She is in a recoverable condition at the moment and safely under cover.
