The Association was formed with the support of Fairey Marine in 1958. Alan Vines, who provided much of the inspiration for the design, was President for the first 15 years.
The names and breadths of the roles have changed through the years as can be seen in the lists on the right.

The Association Leadership roles started as ‘President’ and ‘Vice-President’. This changed in the 1980s with the introduction of the ‘Patron’ role and a move to ‘Commodore’ and ‘Vice-Commodore’.

For most of the AOA’s life so far the roles of Secretary and Treasurer were combined and allocated to a single person. The two roles were separated in 2010.
