About simon

Boat: A5 ** Interest: My father purchased Diaphony in 1977, having just sold Our Lysander 17 called Grebe and with two adults and three kids and a dog it was decided that we needed a bigger boat.Having looked at a few boats my father stumbled across Diaphony A5 at Chichester marina on its trailer, after a while the owner finally clinched the deal with my Father in a pub at Dell Quay . After a year spent renovating A5 she was ready for launching at Chichester .The boat was sailed for the remainder of the 70s and early 80's having crossed the channel many times ,she was returned home for minor work and hasn't seen the water since. ** Location: bucks ** Country: GB

  1. Baby Seal tried to get around problem of seals distorting by fairing the keel boxes externally so that when keels raised the seals didn’t have the constant bend in them, not sure how successful this was or if it increased or decreased performance.

  2. Wow Simon

Diaphony is looking great. I can see many hours of work there and what a great job you have done.

As to keel slots – many different solutions.
    A89 has tried motor-scooter tyres – see here https://atalantaowners.org/a89-keel-slot-flushers/
and also inflatable pillows – https://atalantaowners.org/colchide-back-in-the-water/.

Some people have used commercial ‘door curtain’ material, or similar clear plastic. The AOA have some 3mm x 150mm which was used by Hiran and Helene at least. It works okay but like all of the rubber seals distorts over time.

Having sailed on A102 the most effective I have seen are the Fairey Marine designed keel slot boards – see drawings A24419, C24362, D24590 (plus one other I can’t find just now). To my knowledge A102 Atalanta Mary and A16 Dervorguila both have these fitted. Apparently there is a down side that they can damage the box if the keels are raised suddenly by grounding – see discussion in the last few entries of this post https://atalantaowners.org/forums/topic/how-fast-can-we-make-an-atalanta/

Looking forward to seeing A5 ‘in the flesh’ one day and ideally on the water 😉

    Cheers

    1. cheers Nick
      taking ages but getting there
remade saloon sliding hatch as the skin was 4mm ply and very weak has now been replaced by 6 mm 5 ply engine coming this thurs so that will be the next job..
Also working on the new Alloy mast
not going down the original route as I am chasing performance.
