ParticipantNeedless to say post the photo.
My guess is that the keel being down increases then leverage of the weight.
Has anybody calculated drag forces on a standard Atalanta? I believe it can be done by a towing one using a newton meter, or hanging scales. If we graph this against speed we would to see an initial upwards curve showing the wave forming drag that defines the hull speed then a kind of levelling off as the planing comes in.
Be a good article…

ParticipantThe problem is more about when I am not there. Remember she gets to enjoy the sunny climate far more than I do.

ParticipantColin mentions a hull speed of 7 kts. But I believe the hull shape means it is able to plane. I believe the ability to plane must be restricted by weight. So I got to thinking about lighter keels. That would flatter the hull shape more so than an increased sail area.
Is anybody mad enough to skipper a round the island race attempt? It would be a fitting 60th anniversary? I will crew but there is a stupid number of boats involved and I fear I don’t have the experience. If we get a magazine involved some sponsorship and those interested put some cash or hours in. We do the boat up race it then sell it the proceeds go to the club?
Just an idea worth nothing if nobody is interested.

ParticipantBe interesting to price that up. I would guess the copper powder is expensive and the resin isn´t cheap. 5 litres cost me £227 with the club discount but excluding vat. Which raises an interesting question if I bought it through the marina would I have paid Italian VAT and how much would that have been.
Without trying to sound like I am justifying my decision or that I am biased in any. One of the reasons for a specialist resin is a controlled the rate of decay in the resin. I had read about people using this form of treatment and it basically not working, I understand this is because the resin encapsulates the copper. However I guess that if you ´scrape off’ regularly enough you will scrape the resin back and expose the copper.

ParticipantNot had a chance. Email is easier as I am in Sardinia. Sitting out a patch of rain.

ParticipantThanks Trevor, I have finally trapped myself through inaction again. The decision was finally driven by availability. There is a local paint shop which has had good results with a brand called Brava. It is a tung oil based varnish as opposed to a polyurethane.
I will let you know how I get on with it. It turns up on Friday. I have a boat load of reactive resin chemicals to apply whilst I wait for that to turn up. Keels came off today. Finger count is still 9.9.

ParticipantHi Robbie, Hi All,
Obviously very interested in how you go with your coach roof. I am about to do the same to Mary. The varnish (and I think it is oil based) looks like it is peeling from sunburn. After much deliberation I am going to go with an oil based varnish with lots of coats and a good few thinned ones to start with. I am stripping the old varnish with paint stripper as I fear my outer laminate is very thin in places.
I think I am going to use skipperpaints (Aemme) Starwind Tung oil varnish with extra UV protection. This brand is easier to find in Italy and it seems pretty good. I have booked time off at the end of September so any mistakes you can prevent me from making would be most welcome.
Keep us posted…

ParticipantPanoramic view around the needles and back up towards Hurst.
Eventually I went with just me and the dog. We camped near freshwater (stoats farm). The ferry was too expensive for the car so I left it behind and took the bus.
It is a beautiful walk along Tennyson Down at 5:30 in the morning. The early start was so I could see the expensive boats. I need not have hurried as there was little wind.
I think this is well worth seeing because of the numbers. It was made all the more interesting because once past the needles the current died down and the boats almost stopped. Tempers must have been raised as a number hit the submerged object off the needles.
All in all a lovely weekend I would recommend to anybody.

ParticipantHow much coverage will I need. As I have to send it Bosa I can’t just get a bit more. I figure on about 10 square meters. Am I right?

ParticipantAny chance of a lift to some SNCF station nearer to Valence? My months mooring finishes on the 28th.

ParticipantLe Crotoy is €93 a week. http://www.cnbs.fr.cr tel 0033322278311. I have not stayed there but it is the somme estuary. Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is €135 a week but I can vouch for the facilities and the town. http://www.portsaintvalery.com 0033322602480 telephone numbers include country codes Plus you have the sailing options of the estuary and the somme itself I believe you need the cervini but I doubt anybody will check.
