KeymasterHello and welcome Ray,
As AOA Secretary, I can help members who have questions and requests like yours. I can think of 4-5 trailers in Scotland and Northern England, which may be available for a short term. If you join the AOA, we will be able to give you and A49 the full support she deserves, so hopefully you will join us.
Best wishes,
Richard James

KeymasterHi Doug,
I echo Nick’s comments that it’s great news that A90 has a new home down south. Well done Dom Dobson too.
I put large sleeper-size blocks under each corner of my trailer, which effectively is just fore and aft of the wheels, and this gives good stablity to walk around the boat. I leave the wheels on for safety.
Cheers,
Richard James

KeymasterHi Cameron,
It’s great to hear from you, especially with your boat building experience. The good news is that there are 2 very different Atalantas very near you. The first, Emma Duck, is in Emsworth Marina.
Since 2008, Emma Duck has been laid up in Emsworth Yacht Harbour in West Sussex, under a robust tarpaulin. Prior to coming ashore she did however have a brief dip in the harbour, attributed to the rudder blade bridle wearing through, allowing the blade to drop on a falling tide, but she is now fully dry. Having sat under a cover for 9 years, she now needs rubbing down, undercoat, paint/ varnish, but is sound.
Jobs required:
· New engine, or complete rebuild of current 1974 Volvo engine.
· Some toe-rail section replacement.
· Repair to foredeck near stemhead.
She is for sale for £500 ono. Most importantly, we would like to know she is being looked after and cherished because she’s a lovely boat and deserves more attentive owners.
With a concerted spring refit, Emma Duck could once again be collecting admiring gazes on the water this summer!

KeymasterHi Robbie,
Here is a photo I took a couple of years ago of Hiran’s builder’s plate. You can just see A95 stamped on the lower right.

KeymasterTrevor,
I heard that the original blocks can stick and not kick up if a keel strikes ground, in which case the blocks are forced through the rear of the keel box. Ouch!
How long are the screws on your rubber sealing strips and how many screws are there total?

KeymasterKEEL SEALING STRIPS
This seems like the ideal post to ask some advice about keel sealing strips. As most of you know, Uncle Bernard built A89 Colchide from 1958-1960 and uniquely sheathed the hull with Marglass. He never fitted keel sealing strips and I really don’t want to screw 60 or so screws into the Marglass and risk water penetration between the Marglass and wooden hull. I don’t have the courage or skill to do this work, and there was much “sucking of teeth” when I asked a boatbuilder last winter, having mentioned the Marglass.
One option next winter would be to make and fit the keel box slabs, but there have been some accidents with these.
Any thoughts anyone?

KeymasterWow, what a great website, full of interesting tips from this like-able young chap. Highly recommended to watch this.

KeymasterI will see you there Alistair. We need to do a fair bit of maintenance on Colchide and meet some people at and around SYH about the AOA60 event planned for 24-31 August 2018, full details of which should be on this website by 1 July 2018.

KeymasterWhat a fascinating account in the 1975/76 Bulletin of “Peanut.” It’s so useful having all the Bulletins online now. Well done Webmaster.

KeymasterHere are some photos of A89’s boarding ladder, which fits either on the cockpit starboard side, or the transom.

KeymasterHi Robbie,
Bernard changed the tyres on his Zetwin trailer a few years ago and wanted to stick with crossply tyres.
I bought him 4 x 6.5 R16 Kuhmo 975s and 4 x 600/650 16 tubes from Micheldever Tyres, Hants.
Hope that helps.

KeymasterTrevor,
Thank you for a very interesting and timely article. My windows are out and I plan to replace them over the winter. The windows I removed measure between 4.5mm and 8mm, and that was after removing 50 years of mastic and silicon. A89’s coach roof is 6.6mm thick around the windows, so I was hoping to buy 6 or 8mm Acrylic. Which would you suggest please?
You mentioned that you re-tapped the holes in the inner frames to a slightly larger metric size.Would that be 5mm?
How long were your new stainless steel screws?
Thanks again for all your advice.

KeymasterDom – Thank you for your tip about Bradford Rubber. They supplied some excellent fire resistant neporene at a very reasonable price. I took it to Bernard in a suitcase and he is working on it now.
Trevor – Thank you for your comment too.
